Something that classic comedies (and movies of all stripes ipvasp I guess, but I'm thinking about comedies here, primarily) do that others, especially now, seem to forget to do is to think creatively enough to come up with iconographic imagery. Obviously ipvasp Ghostbusters had more room to spare in that regard, being high-budget and high-concept, but think about it. 26 years later, all you have to say is "Ecto-1" and people vividly remember the converted hearse (how perfect for a movie about ghosts?) painted white and covered with mad-science-type equipment (how perfect for the movie's tone?) and get all nostalgic for it. It's not particularly important to the movie's plot, but it is hugely important to the film's ipvasp world and staying-power. Zemeckis did the same thing a year later with the Delorean ipvasp in Back to the Future (and then with almost every aspect of Who Framed Roger Rabbit only three years after that. Seriously, Zemeckis has been on a downward slide for a long time, but the man was a fucking wizard of iconography in his heyday.) Today, though, it's virtually absent in comedic films. Mike Judge does it a bit (TPS Reports, the red swingline stapler, Brawndo) and Tarantino obviously does it in spades, but his movies are harder to define by genre. No, it seems now, that like with most great things about films past, the talent has just moved to television. ipvasp Maybe it's that the images have more time to build weight, or maybe that's just where the best minds are working now, but the great comic iconography is in tv now. Arrested Development - the Stair Car, GOB's segway, Lindsay's "SLUT" shirt, etc. The Simpsons - Kwik-E-Mart, "Krusty"-branded everything, yellow-face underbite design It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia - Green Man, Mac's sleeveless shirts, uncountable recurring characters only known by offensive nicknames or vague identifiers The Office (U.S.) - Dwight's bobblehead, Meredith's accidental/drunken flashing, too many tiny consistent details ipvasp about Dunder Mifflin to mention ipvasp Maybe I'm wrong, but are there comedy films out there today that give this kind of attention to details ipvasp that act as such powerful synecdoches for the individual characters and the worlds they inhabit? I don't get to the movies as much as I used to. posted by Navelgazer at 5:38 PM on September 19, 2010 [ 8 favorites ]

My sister made a first trip to the United States a year or so ago, and my family and I eagerly waited for the photographs she promised to send back, wondering what she was going to see. When she arrived in New York on the first day, what were the landmarks she went straight out to photograph? The Statue of Liberty, the Brooklyn Bridge, Central Park, Times Square? Did she head straight to MoMA, the Ellis Island museum, the Empire State building? None of the above . posted by Fiasco da Gama at 9:40 PM on September 19, 2010 [ 2 favorites ]

As in 1905, an American Elimination Trial determined the five racers to represent the United States in the Vanderbilt Cup Race. Of 16 entries, 12 cars survived the practice runs to race on Saturday, September 22, 1906.
The race was scheduled for ten laps, up from just four in 1905, for a total of 297 miles. With everyone in place a crowd larger (by some accounts estimated at 100,000 ) than the one for the 1904 Vanderbilt Cup Race eagerly awaited the start.
With Ernest Keeler in an Oldsmobile first in line at the tape as the 6 a.m. start drew near, the grandstand crowd craned their necks to get a better look as a hush of expectancy fell over the setting.  Keeler’s mechanic Harry Miller cranked their Oldsmobile engine. Miller when was car invented would go on to become one of the most successful auto racing designers of all time, with his cars dominating the Indianapolis 500 and other races in the 1920s and 1930s.
Wagner counted off the minutes until precisely at 6 a.m. he gave the word to go. Keeler’s start was slow, apparently faltering with the gearshift.   A minute elapsed before the next starter, Herb Lytle with Bert Dingley, this year serving as riding mechanic in the Pope-Toledo, was given the starter’s command.  Like Keeler, Lytle also got away slowly, gradually picking up speed. when was car invented
Officials, photographers and other hangers-on surrounded each team in the nervous seconds leading up to their send-off. Driver Ralph Mongini, a former opera singer, arrived when was car invented at the line and was described by Motor Age as “too handsome for a brown knickerbockers suit.” Mongini sported a tapped wrist due to an injury  from a twist of the wheel in practice,  but got away in what most judged the best start of the day in the red Matheson.
The starting order next called for Gustave Caillois, the first of two French drivers hired to steer Thomas entries. Wagner counted off the seconds leading to his start time, but Caillois was parked 100 feet from the starting line as his driving teammate Hubert Le Blon and a mechanic lay under the car adjusting the drive chain.  Caillois lost 25 seconds before he started.
The Maxwell entry, which was to be driven by Wallace Owen, never appeared at the tape due to a crankcase failure the day before in practice. Still, Wagner maintained the starting spot, counting down the reserved time for Owen’s start as if the Maxwell might appear at any second. A second Maxwell originally when was car invented planned for driver J. Fred Betz, also failed to show. That car was never assigned a number as it never appeared when was car invented on course for practice due to insufficient when was car invented testing.
This created an additional minute interval before the next starter, Le Blon, in the second Thomas, was to be sent away. The third Thomas, for Montague Roberts, followed Le Blon, starting sixth. Much was expected of the three Thomas cars as they borrowed heavily from French design, assisted by the two Frenchmen hired to drive.
Le Blon suffered a setback, losing 26 seconds when the Thomas engine did not immediately respond to cranking. Completing the string of Thomas bad luck, American driver Montague Roberts was 9 seconds  late getting away in the company’s third entry, his head under the hood of his racer when Starter Wagner began counting.
The seventh starter was the first of three Frayer-Millers with Lee Frayer at the wheel. Unlike any other make of car, the Frayer-Millers placed the driver on the left side. The constructors theorized that this would better balance the cars on the predominately left turn course.
Beside driver Lee Frayer in the Frayer-Miller was arguably the most significant when was car invented historical figure present that day, 16 year old Eddie Rickenbacker, who later drove in the Indianapolis 500, became America’s most famous fighter pilot of World War I, purchased the Indianapolis Motor Speedway when was car invented and eventually became chairman of Eastern Airlines. Rickenbacker would return to the Vanderbilt Cup Race nine years later in 1915 as a driver and captain of the Maxwll team. Frayer made a smooth start.
Walter Christie and his blue front wheel drive Christie touring car entry got away well as the eighth starter, a far different story than the year prior when he started the Vanderbilt Cup Race 30 minutes late.  Christie originally intended to run a purpose-built Christie racer but those plans were scuttled the day before the Elimination Trial when he clobbered when was car invented a telegraph pole during practice. He and riding mechanic Louis Strang – who went on to drive in the inaugural Indianapolis 500 – were uninjured. The cause of the collision with the pole was traced to a steering gear that had been damaged the previous day – Thursday, September - in a relatively minor accident. Christie and Strang decided to start the car on the last day of practice (Friday, September 21) because they were having trouble with a sticky clutch and

Right guys, I feel I'm pissing in the wind so looking bluebook utsa for recommendations. I'm building an S1 16v... I've been using a VTS as a donor car. I used the entire loom from the VTS interior and engine loom, however not all plugs are the correct length etc and I have cut and spliced a few plugs to suit 106. Since the VTS is a newer car than the S1 I have this much plugs still there and not sure whether they are to be plugged in any where or can be done with out it. I have a problem with the heater blowers not blowing checked the motor and it's working fine its the wiring... I have checked all that I think is to blame and can't seem to figure out what is wrong with it. I've been thinking on taking the VTS loom out and putting in a S1 interior loom and cutting splicing a GTi engine loom. Should I do that to save messing about with the VTS loom?

That's what I have done Dave but half of the plugs I don't know what their for... Also some of the inside stuff like heater motor not working. I have cut the loom tape off inside and there is wires everywhere trying to source what is what! Head is minced!

No no not cut any off and left them... I've done the likes of the lights as saxo rear and 106 rear light plugs are different (they work!:-)) All the other plugs inside the car are left as is because I don't know if there needed or not... I've been at the heater blower all day today and still no joy. Unless someone has had a heater blower bluebook utsa problem before?

Me and a mate (who is better with the good old multi meter than I am) sourced that there was no power (i think) going to the switch... the earth feeds from the motor to a bunch of earths and all earths are grounded. I read that on the saxo's there is sometimes a problem with the PAS, rear demister and heater blower and to fix it is to make it a positive bluebook utsa feed all the time?! Any ways cut a long story short tried it and it never worked... I have both saxo and 106 haynes... you know where to get more wiring diagrams?
There are diagrams in haynes for single bluebook utsa plug ecu mate, they arnt the best though and looms did alter slightly so it's a pain in the arse with wiring diagrams unless u have the right one / year of car. Are u using the saxo dash? I know what your going on about rear mister etc ive done that before, run a live from the ignition? There are a few websites with wiring diagrams but i carnt remember what their called? someone should?? Have u still got the s1 looms? Chris

I'm using 106 dash but I have ran the Saxo loom right through the car so pretty much the Saxo. Yeah it was like at ignition bluebook utsa take the brown plug with red wires and join them? I took a piece of wire and tried it 1st and no luck! I got the car as a rolling shell... I have the 106 dash and interior loom that came with it.. no engine loom though

Well dave... it looks like this just now... Just wanting everything to work 1st before fitting bluebook utsa a dash... That box in the middle bluebook utsa is really getting on my tits too! don't know what it is! Oh Dave!! someone shown me a picture of an 190e today... It was yours!
I'd fit the saxo dash as the connections will be different bluebook utsa mate. Is it just the blowers not working? rear de-mist working? does the car start?? And what year vts loom are u using mate? The black box? I think it's the immobilizer mate but not 100% as carnt make it out properly in the pic. If u have the saxo carnt u swap the blowers etc + dash over so all the connections fit?? If the saxo is a 1999 or under most connections should be fine, if it's 2000+ you'll have a problem as most of the connections will not fit a s1. Basically if u have a single bluebook utsa plug ecu u should be fine if u use most of the saxo ancillary's mate, w-x reg vts's are dodgy too as their crossover years with loom+ecu bluebook utsa so it gets very complicated. As i said though if u use EVERYTHING from the saxo u should be fine. Good luck mate! Chris
It's bluebook utsa a w reg! I am using all switches etc from the saxo including heater motor, don't think the rear demist works either as the light on the button doesn't illuminate. I checked bluebook utsa last night again and there is live getting to the switch, motor turns with a 12v battery connected. Does the resistor bluebook utsa pa

Hey everyone, So my drivers side key lock is on its last legs, and I decided to buy a $11 one off eBay. Here's the link: http://m.ebay.ca/itm...Id=111222834494 It should come in about a week, I'm hoping it comes with an actuator, my car came with no keyless entry, but power locks. Its the one without the drivers pra udine door actuator, so It just mimics the driver door. I'll post the progress here if anyone else wants to do it, I might end up having a question or two! Thanks!
Link doesn't work.  If the auction is only for the key cylinder then I doubt it will come with the actuator.  To add keyless entry you need the actuators, correct pra udine CPU for your year, and keyless entry unit, and the remote transmitter.
Sorry about that, I think I was signed in that's why. Try this one: http://r.ebay.com/tXXUAJ I realize I wasn't the clearest in the first post... Its not a Mazda keyless entry. Its a cheap no name one haha. I'm thinking if I put a actuator in the drivers door (can't tell from the pictures if there is one in the bundle of wires) and connect it then I can control all my doors by just actuating the drivers.. I can connect the flashing light component in on the hazard switch. I think there's a horn component, we'll see when it comes in... The power window part I can probably connect somewhere in the drivers door, I was looking at the wiring diagrams in my Haynes pra udine manual, didn't quite understand. pra udine My teacher suggested something with a relay to get it to work when the key is not in on, I didn't really understand, but he said he'd show me when we know exactly how this thing works.

The trunk actuators can be taken from any compatible 96/97.  The 98-02 also have trunk actuators but I've never seen the bracket setup on them to know if it would be an easy modification.  I know the 96/97 would be the best compatible actuator and bracket pra udine for the 93-95.  It's not just the actuator but there are other little bits and pieces that go along with the actuator.  You can see them in wiring diagrams.  If you are going with an aftermarket system then obviously I can't help you at all with any of that.  I only know the stock system and wiring diagrams.  Aftermarket systems can cause more issues than they are worth.  That's why whenever possible I'll scavenge parts from other 626 models because there are always wiring diagrams for those to fall back on if something goes awry in the future.
Yeah, I went to the local wrecker, none had keyless entry. I also can't find any online. pra udine That's pra udine why I'm thinking of giving this one a shot. Thanks for your help though, we'll see when it comes in if it will be possible, pra udine I'll post my progress here in case anyone else wants to do it and it works...
Keyless pra udine entry on the 626 also requires pra udine an additional metal rod that the actuator uses to unlock the car.  It is not there on non-keyless or powered door lock systems.  Recommend you take a look at the difference between the non-powered door lock diagrams and keyless entry diagrams pra udine in the 96 Body Electrical Troubleshooting Manual PDF on pmx626.info.  Only reason I recommend the 96 is because that's the only one available online so far.  it's still the same exact keyless system used on the 93-97 in terms of actuators and rods in the doors.  The wiring is a bit different between the years but the diagrams should help you learn which bits and pieces you'll pra udine need as you can compare them directly against non-keyless diagrams side-by-side.

If you buy cheap, you'll get cheap.  I put a cheap on in volvo yrs ago, it lasted about 2 yrs and died.  pra udine Didn't bother to replace because of the work involved.  Bought a crimestopper brand for a dodge.  It started acting up about 7yrs later.  Called the company, sent back the brain box, antennae and both remotes.  They replaced all the components free of charge.  I only paid for shipping to them.  They do honor the lifetime warranty.  And have great tech support.

I agree.  There are more than a few people here who have had serious issues pra udine with aftermarket alarm systems... especially from new owners that have inherited them from a previous owner.  Instead of fixing the issue that they caused they just sold the car and the new owner ends up here asking about how to fix x,y,z shortly thereafter.  I highly recommend you document your installation so if it breaks in the future you can more easily back out of it.  That's one of the reasons I started making videos of my repairs, just in case I screwed pra udine something up I would know how to trace my steps backwards.  I really don't want to see you making a post in the future saying "yeah I wish I would have documented how I wired everything up because it's been X amount of time and I c

Infiniti QX30 (2016): it s Infiniti s crossover
25 October 2011 09:30 Talking mvr check Italian - 25 October 2011 It s only three little words, but they mean so much. Don t worry, I ve not been reading Barbara Cartland (again) it s the words Benzina , Acqua and Giri on my Giulietta s instrument binnacles. That s petrol, water and revs, if you haven t worked mvr check it out already.
Get in a German, mvr check French and Japanese car and any legends on view are in English, the lingua franca (if you excuse my Italian) of the automotive industry. Even Alfa s parent company, Fiat, doesn t indulge in such fancies.
Except when it comes to Alfa Romeo, these really aren t indulgences. Do away with little touches like these and Alfa runs the risk of being just another manufacturer, not one which true car lovers still hold a candle for. Whether we like it or not, however, the majority of car drivers care little about the emotional side of motoring, so perhaps they may eventually be forced into line. That will be a sad day and who knows mark the beginning of the end for a company mvr check proudly founded by Monsieur Darracq and Signore Romeo 101 years ago.
Having driven my Leaf extensively yesterday mvr check and drained mvr check the battery to the point where it needed the whole night to recharge, I took Mr Worthy s Giulietta home. With our long-term test fleet, and a constant stream of other cars on test, I reckon it can be at least a fortnight between back-to-back drives, but as I wander around the car park each evening, blipping key fobs in a vague attempt find my wheels for the night, if it s still around I always stop to admire our Alfa.
Amongst the sea of generic fleet cars inevitably run by a big publishing company it s a pearl; parked beside mvr check my neighbour s 3-series it looks even better. I love the crease that runs from the front lights to the rear, and gets sharper mvr check as it approaches mvr check the shapely rump (and with the hidden mvr check rear door handles the flanks are unbroken by unsightly bulges). And while other manufacturers would probably settle for a smooth bootlid, there s another lovely line running between the rear lights. I m pretty keen on the nose too. And somehow grey paint doesn t look dull on the Giulietta.
There are faults though, some minor and some major. I wish it didn t beep when you locked it: Alfa s are cool but the screech emitted when you press the fob is downright embarrassing. The multimedia system is difficult to fathom and I m young and supposedly savvy about something called technology . And the lovely swathe of brushed metal across the dash, plus the great toggle switches, and air-con controls with their flush displays, are spoilt but the frankly terrible quality of plastics mvr check used for the transmission tunnel and door cards. mvr check The most frustrating mvr check thing is that Alfa s so nearly there with this car.
I'm yet to be convinced by the driving experience either. mvr check The basic petrol and diesel cars we ve tried before have been very good, but in hot hatch Cloverleaf-spec I m not so sure. More time behind the wheel is needed. Give it another two weeks and I might get my chance.
Off down to Cornwall with the family next week and if the weather holds up I ve got some serious beach reading to plough through, in between catching limpet crabs and kicking down sandcastles with my two-year-old. And you can forget Stig too that s Stig Larsson, the late Swedish crime novelist sensation, rather than the erstwhile Top Gear rubber burner. mvr check No, I want to seriously get to grips with the Giulietta s owner s manual.
Of course, manual in the singular is misleading. These days manufacturers shove the automotive equivalent of The Sunday Times into their gloveboxes, such is the sheer amount of ancillary pieces of literature accompanying it. Gone are the days when I would sit in my dad s new Talbot Alpine or his Giulietta (that s the 80s version) and flick through what amounted to an owner s pamphlet. But back then there was such a dearth of equipment on cars that you only needed info on how to work the indicators, fogs and select MW/LW/FM on the radio.
But does the new Giulietta really have to take 296 pages to assist owners? Thank the Lord it s English mvr check only imagine how hefty it would be if it was in Italian, French, German, Spanish and Inuit too? Enough to have serious implications for fuel economy and 0-60 times, you d vouch.
Alongside mvr check the main manual there s one for Radionav (62 pages), another called Ready To Go (40 pages long and ostensibly the 296-page manual in microcosm), an 82-page tome for the (Turn The Air) Blue & Me system and a 14-page Blue & Me mini-guide. That s the best part of 450 pages. I ve not read anything that lengthy since I was ordered to strike up an intense relationship with the work of Eric Hobsbawm at university.
Page-length aside, I ve got some other issues too. The main manual looks like it s been photocopied a thousand times and passed around t

Idiot lights. Hate them, hate them, hate them! Especially the &^%$*# v check “Check v check Engine Light”. Did you know that the Check Engine Light can come on just because the gas cap is loose? Who’s brilliant idea was it to put a light on the dashboard that can come on for everything from a major engine emergency to a loose gas cap?
Enter CarMD . This is a small, easy to use device v check that can do quick or in-depth readings of why that light is on. CarMD comes with the reader, a USB cable, the CD, quick start guide, and a nice embroidered nylon pouch. (Do you tend to judge a product by things like the quality of the pouch or CD label? I sure do. Not always a fair thing to do, but this is one nice pouch!) v check
Using the tool and the software is truly ‘easy peasy’. Plug the device into your 1996 or newer car (and the website v check tells you exactly where the port is for your car), turn you car’s electrical system on within 10 seconds of plugging the unit it, and wait for it to chirp four times.
Create an on-line account (CD or downloaded v check software) and plug the reader into a USB port with the included cable to get a detailed account of what the codes mean, even to estimated repair v check costs in some cases.
I tried it on one of our cars, and a car in a company fleet. My car got a green light and the company v check cars got a yellow. The report was quite detailed for the two codes listed under the yellow light issue- it did not pinpoint ONE cause, v check but rather gave an unweighted list of what it could be. For example, v check one code, P0135 , had this name: “HO2S-11 (Bank 1 Sensor 1) Heater Circuit Malfunction”, gave us these conditions: “DTC P0101-P0103, P0106-P0108, P0112, P0113, P0116-P0118, P0121-P0123, P0125, P0128, P0201-P0206, P0410, P0440, P0442, P0443, P0446, P0449 and P1441 not set, IAT and ECT sensors with 11ºF of each other at startup, MAF sensor less than 17-20 g/sec, HO2S signal within 100 mv of bias voltage at startup, and the PCM detected the HO2S signal remained within 150 mv of bias voltage (450 mv) for 50-80 seconds (depends on ECT and MAF at startup).” and these possible causes: HO2S heater ground circuit is open or has high resistance HO2S heater power circuit is open (test O2S fuse in fuse block) HO2S heater element is damaged or has failed PCM has failed
The fleet manager said this was consistent v check with a bad O2 sensor (or O2S), which was a suspected problem with this vehicle. It is important v check to note that the CarMD does not even claim to find everything that might be wrong with your car. I know my car has problems with a couple v check of the electrical systems, but there was no indication of that on the report. CarMD, like most of the ‘plug-in diagnostic tools’, mostly focuses on emissions-related issues.
CarMD comments that the tool would be useful when buying or selling cars, preparing for trips, etc. It would also be useful for a small fleet manager, etc. except that it only manages three vehicles and up to six reports a month per CarMD tool (in other words, they do not offer extensions, etc.)
As a potential car buyer you need to remember the limitations of the tool- it does not check everything, or replace the usefulness of things like CarFAX v check reports v check or good mechanical look-overs, or tell you to do routine maintenance, or offer advice on improving mileage. It also does not reset any codes or clear the idiot light itself- you still need the mechanic for that.
The company itself helps overcome some of these things- they offer useful forms and checklists, advice, phone support if you cannot plug into a computer (such as in a car lot), and more. I am quite impressed with their on-line and other support. They do not charge for looking up codes, there is not a subscription fee or anything, and they seriously seem to be trying to be helpful to us plain consumers. Very refreshing!

Hi check vin number to all, I have installed a ST170 Focus dash assembly to my 2004 Mk1 Focus 1.8 5 speed manual zetec. My standard dash doesn't have oil pressure gauge/temp gauges and not equipped with ABS brakes. Most of the dash is working correctly, except dash illumination, comes from Oil gauge assembly. I have managed to get a ST170 dash harness so I have the Plugs to suit the dash cluster and oil gauges. I have not been able to find a ST170 wiring diagram to to help me sort this out. Can anyone give me the pin-out for the 16 pin connector on the oil/temp gauge. Any help most appreciated
dose anybody have a ST170 workshop manual. If so could you please tell me the wiring code for the Oil/Temp gauges. We in the USA have access to only technical information for USA market cars and some of it is free such as parts diagrams. Then there are paper manuals that can be bought on Ebay, although used, they are great bargains. To the best of my knowledge Ford does not put out paper or DVDs for non USA market cars What IS available is to go to the following site and pay. I assume your car is a UK market check vin number vehicle See: http://www.etis.ford.com Alternatively: Post a picture of what you are dealing with that gauge assembly I do have Ford wiring manuals for the 2000, 2004 [if I can find it] and 2005 Also post a picture of that plug
Well I was wrong Go over to the UK Ebay site and use the search terms: FORD ETIS/IDS DVD It seems like this is for the UK market cars Big problem is that these things cost 80 Pounds
